Bench Scientist

Alphanumeric is hiring a BENCH SCIENTIST to work in Collegeville, PA with one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

An exciting opportunity is available to participate in operation of the Codexis CodeEvolver? enzyme evolution platform. This platform technology enables use of enzymes and cells in small and large molecule drug manufacturing.

The primary focus of the role is to support the directed evolution platform by participating in the construction, expression, and NGS sequencing of enzyme libraries. The successful candidate would participate on an interdisciplinary team tasked with providing fit for purpose enzymes to chemistry project teams.

Key responsibilities:

  • Optimize 96-well library preparation protocols

  • Utilize high throughput cloning technology to construct mutant enzyme libraries

  • Manipulate large-scale datasets using MS Excel and equipment interfacing programs.

  • Optimize 96-well protein expression in various host organisms

  • Liaise with scientists & external collaborators at all levels

  • Generate conclusion reports, present data in team meetings & participate in writing of abstracts & publications

  • Conduct scientific work programs and make contributions both independently or as a member of a team with other R&D staff

  • Work through problems logically and apply innovative solutions

  • Adopt new technologies and apply them to project work

  • Maintain customer focus, motivate self, and demonstrate a high degree of urgency

  • Use scientific literature and database resources in the execution of project related work

  • Exhibit flexibility, being open to new ways of working

Basic qualifications:

  • MS with 1-3 years relevant experience or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology or related field

  • Experience with modern molecular biology techniques, including PCR, digest, ligation, and gel electrophoresis

  • Experience in bacterial protein expression

  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams, displaying excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

  • Experience optimizing enzyme expression, especially for high-throughput applications

  • Awareness of synthetic biology and enzyme engineering techniques

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with high-throughput liquid handling and automation equipment

  • Knowledge of standard bioinformatics and structural analysis tools

  • Understanding of directed evolution approaches including both random and rational methods

  • Awareness of next-generation DNA sequencing technologies and library preparation protocols

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
